Job description, responsibilities, and duties

The Assistant Director for Research leads and oversees the GeoTech Center’s research and policy analysis agenda, setting strategic priorities and ensuring that all outputs are rigorous, policy-relevant, and designed for real-world impact. While contributing with one’s own original analysis, the role focuses on designing, commissioning, guiding, and coordinating the work of internal teams and external fellows to translate expertise into influential insights for decision-makers. This position is suited for a senior analytical leader who excels at shaping research for impact, managing people and processes, and amplifying the collective work of others.

The position reports to the Director of the Center (General John R. Allen) through the Deputy Director

Assistant Director for Research has the following responsibilities:

Strategy and policy

  • Proposes the research and policy analysis strategy of the Center, including topics, types of outputs, and outreach plans
  • Identifies potential authors, commissions, oversees, and directs researched based on the strategy
  • Ensures quality and relevance of the produced outputs, oversees the peer review process of all research products
  • Conducts independent research
  • Identifies relevant experts and defines ways to engage them in the work of the Center
  • Builds the network of relevant stakeholders, engages with stakeholders to discuss the relevant inputs and ideas
  • Develops and oversees the content and relevant speakers for various types of events organized by the Center
  • Represents the Center in the media where relevant
  • Delivers briefings in the field of expertise to relevant stakeholders (government representatives, business stakeholders, expert communities, and other)

Management

  • Coordinates effectively research process 
  • Manages and guides external contributors and fellows
  • Supervises the organisation of events related to the area of expertise
  • Develops and controls timelines, activities, deadlines, and budgets associated with research activities
  • Liaises with communication team to inform the outreach campaigns

Fundraising

  • Contributes with ideas and written inputs to the proposals for potential partners
  • Writes project proposals when and where applicable
  • Presents ideas to potential partners

Location

  • The position is open to individuals who can work from Brussels, Prague or remotely from an EU country or the UK

Requirements and skills

  • Understanding of key areas of research work of the Center: intersections of technology and national security, critical enabling infrastructure (data centers, connectivity infrastructure, semiconductors, and other elements).
  • Established track record of analytical work in the field
  • A candidate is required to have at least 5 years of experience in the public or private sector covering related areas
  • Advanced university degree, preferably a degree in computer or data science
  • High level of analytical skills supported by sound results
  • Able to manage multiple and complex tasks, and to work under pressure in a deadline-focused environment
  • Proven track record in writing and editing expert publications
  • Experience in speaking at international events and commenting for media
  • Experience with team and project management.
